Common Parking Lot Problems
Most of the parking lots serviced by FSG have similar problems. Their large parking areas are illuminated by only a few outdated fixtures. For facilities that were built when metal halide or mercury vapor lights were in fashion, the contrast between their parking lots and newer lots filled with LED lighting is dramatic. For business owners, insult is added to injury when the electric bill comes and reveals that inferior lighting is more expensive than brighter, cleaner, customer-pleasing LED.
Security Delivers Business Profits
It really doesn’t matter that law enforcement officials report fewer crimes in well-lit areas. The fact that customers won’t shop where they don’t feel safe should be your number one reason to explore a better parking lot lighting solution. For malls, retail stores, car dealerships, airports, restaurants, movie theaters, and downtown parking structures, upgraded parking lot lighting makes customers feel safer and delivers profits for your business.
$30k/Year
Energy Savings
In the case study below, Ingram Park Mall saved over $30,000 each year in energy costs by switching to LED lighting for its parking lots. And that number is not a fluke. FSG customers have saved up to 80% on their overall energy consumption after working with our expert parking lot lighting contractors to find a facility solution that works for them. We’ll get to work finding all available energy rebates and programs offered by municipalities, service providers, and manufacturers to immediately save you money.

Parking Lot Lighting Retrofit: Byron Nelson High School
District Energy Manager Dr. Charles Ashby to upgrade their exterior lighting to LED to improve lighting levels and campus safety. Before the lighting retrofit, the parking lot and the exterior of the school building were poorly lit at night, a situation that wasn't ideal or safe.
For this project, we used GE products to upgrade the floodlights near the main entrance, parking lot pole fixtures including deco pole lights around the building and interior courtyard, and some wall packs on the north side of the building. The result is a well-lit campus with improvements not only in their energy bills but also in safety and security.

Reasons to upgrade your parking lot lighting
Parking Lot Light Fixtures Are Burned Out
Burned out or malfunctioning lights need to be replaced. Some people think that burned-out lights aren’t using any electricity. But if the lamp is burned out, the ballast is still drawing power. Often, this is hard on the ballast and can cause it to fail prematurely.
Have a plan in place in advance to address burned-out lights. If you plan to upgrade an old burned-out metal halide, high pressure sodium, or mercury vapor lamp with a new LED, it often makes sense to change out the rest of your old parking lot lights.
You Have Uneven Lighting Coverage
Unevenly lit and dark parking lots can cause problems for your business. Every inch of your parking lot should have proper light coverage for your safety and the safety of your customers and employees.
A lighting expert can help you get the right lamps, fixtures, and an overall design that delivers the best coverage for your parking lot. Commercial property owners have a responsibility to provide a safe and welcoming environment in their parking lots.
Reduce Lighting & Energy Costs
Traditional parking lot light fixtures are more expensive to operate and maintain. Review your energy bill to get an idea of how much you spend now.
If you consider that replacing old lighting can reduce your energy bill by 50-70%, retrofitting your parking lot lights can dramatically reduce your operating expenses. LED lighting can provide energy savings for business owners and commercial property owners and managers.
Improve Security In Your Parking Lot
Dark parking lots attract crime, putting customers and employees at risk. If you have a high crime rate in your parking lot, you could lose customers. Even if the crime rate in your area is low, if your parking lot looks unsafe your customers will assume the crime rate is high.
Criminals prefer operating under the cover of darkness, so keeping your lights on goes a long way toward protecting your business, employees, and customers.
Reduce Maintenance Costs
Old lights require more maintenance than you might think. Legacy high-intensity discharge lights such as metal halide lamps have more issues with ballasts and burn out more frequently than updated LED lights.
As these lamps get older and generate more heat, the arc tube deteriorates and can rupture, which can cause the outer glass bulb to break as well.
Rather than using inefficient lights that require more time and attention, upgrade to energy-efficient lights that last much longer. Your overall maintenance costs over time will drop dramatically once your upgrade your parking lot lighting to LED.
Rebates & Incentives Are Available
Many utility companies across the country offer rebates and incentives to businesses that are upgrading their parking lot lighting to LED. These lighting rebates and incentives help to improve ROI on projects and can help pay for the project.

Upgrading your parking lot lighting offers a range of benefits that enhances safety, efficiency, and cost savings. Modern LED lighting solutions provide brighter, more uniform illumination, improving visibility for drivers and pedestrians, which helps reduce accidents and deter criminal activity. LEDs are also significantly more energy-efficient than traditional lighting, lowering your energy bills and reducing your environmental footprint.
In addition, LED fixtures have a longer lifespan, minimizing maintenance costs and disruptions. Many advanced systems also allow for smart controls, such as motion sensors and dimming capabilities, further optimizing energy use. By upgrading your parking lot lighting, you invest in a safer, more sustainable, and cost-effective solution for your property.
Yes. Retrofitting your parking lot lighting with energy-efficient solutions, such as LED fixtures, can significantly reduce your utility bills. LEDs use up to 75% less energy compared to traditional lighting like metal halide or high-pressure sodium fixtures, resulting in immediate savings.
Also, modern LED systems often include advanced controls, such as motion sensors and dimming capabilities, which further optimize energy use by ensuring lights are only on when needed. Over time, these savings can add up, providing a strong return on investment while also lowering maintenance costs due to LED’s longer lifespan. FSG specializes in designing and implementing parking lot lighting retrofits that deliver maximum energy efficiency and cost savings tailored to your business needs.
LED is the clear winner for property owners looking for superior parking lot lighting. LEDs are highly energy-efficient, consuming up to 75% less energy than traditional lighting options like metal halides or fluorescent bulbs, which can lead to substantial cost savings on your energy bills.
LEDs also have a longer lifespan, reducing maintenance costs and minimizing disruptions caused by frequent bulb replacements. Also, LEDs provide brighter, more streamlined illumination, as it improves visibility and enhances safety for employees, customers, and visitors. This enhanced lighting solution can also boost your property’s curb appeal, making your business more inviting and professional.
Yes, you can absolutely automate your parking lot lighting, and doing so can significantly improve energy efficiency, safety, and convenience. Automation is achieved by integrating smart lighting controls, such as timers, motion sensors, and daylight sensors, into your parking lot lighting system.
If a vehicle has damaged one of your light poles, call a licensed electrician as soon as possible! Once a commercial lighting contractor is on-site, they can quickly assess the problem and safely get the pole back in service.
Whatever you do, do not disturb the area where the pole was damaged. If the pole is leaning and is a potential hazard to your customers or employees, barricade the area around the pole so that if it falls, there are no vehicles damaged or people injured.
The specific number of light poles you need to properly illuminate your parking lot is determined by a certified lighting expert. When you call FSG, one of our lighting experts will conduct an audit of your property to determine current foot candle values, the proper number and placement of lighting fixtures, and the ideal lumen levels that will deliver safety and security for your customers and employees at night.
A footcandle is a lighting measurement that relates to the amount of light on the ground beneath a parking lot light. This is not the output of the light, but rather the result of that output, and it can vary according to a number of environmental factors.
