Frequently Asked Questions
Have a question? Here are some of the most frequently asked questions of our team.
Industrial lighting is any form of lighting that is found in certain types of commercial spaces. These spaces include warehouses, distribution centers, manufacturing plants, storage facilities, chemical plants or refineries, and similar types of specialized properties. Industrial lighting is normally used to ensure a well-lit, safe working environment for workers.
Calculating the existing lighting for a space, or the lighting needed for a space can be tricky.
You can read about a method called the lumen method here.
While it is possible to do yourself, we recommend having a lighting expert come and provide a professional measurement and lighting audit of your space.
According to OSHA, 5 foot-candles is the minimum lighting required for some warehouses. In some other cases, 10-20 foot-candles is the minimum. It depends on the purpose of the warehouse. In most cases, a much higher foot-candle number is recommended for safety and efficiency. You can see the minimum requirements for your specific facility by visiting the OSHA website.
There are several different types of industrial warehouse lighting fixtures that you will come across. Inside the warehouse, you will mostly find:
- High-bay fixtures
- Low-bay fixtures
- Industrial strip fixtures
Outside on the exterior of the warehouse you may find a variety of exterior lighting fixtures, including:
- Wall packs
- Flood lights
- Canopy lighting
- Bollards
The most common types of industrial lighting are high bay lighting and low bay lighting.
High bay lighting is used in warehouses with high ceilings. The fixtures provide a wide even spread of light over an area. High bay fixtures tend to have a higher wattage and light output.
Low-bay lighting is used in smaller areas, generally with lower ceilings. Low-bay fixtures typically have a lower wattage and less light output since they are not mounted on high ceilings.
When designing lighting layouts in an industrial setting, there are multiple things to consider.
Consider the purpose of the lighting system. Is it meant to illuminate work areas or provide general illumination? You may need some different fixtures depending on the purpose of the space.
The type of work being done in the space. Different types of work require different amounts of illumination, both legally and practically.
The last big consideration is the size of the space. How big is the space and how high are the ceilings? These are both big factors in the lights that are needed.
